How to Become a Dental Assistant in Smithfield Utah

Smithfield UT dental assistant working with dentistSelecting the right dental assistant school near Smithfield UT is an essential initial step toward beginning your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your choice, you need to analyze and compare your school options. There is far more to completing your due diligence than choosing the dental assistant program with the lowest tuition or enrolling in the one that is closest to your home. There are other crucial issues to take into account also, including the program’s accreditation and reputation. Your initial step is to decide which of the two credentials you are most interested in receiving training for, which may depend on the amount of time and money that you have to invest. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 1 year to complete for a certificate or diploma. On the other hand dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to accomplish. Naturally with the lengthier training comes more cost. We will explore all of these considerations and additional questions that you should be asking the dental assistant schools you are assessing later in this article. But first, let’s review the roles of dental assistants and further discuss the training options available.

The Function of a Dental Assistant in Smithfield UT

Smithfield UT dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an important component of any Smithfield UT dental office and can carry out a myriad of functions. Their principal job description is to give assistance to the admin staff and the dentists. In other words, to help keep the practice working efficiently. A number of dental assistants elect to specialize and earn certification in a specific area, for example orthodontics. However the majority of assistants carry out any job that they are asked to complete, including:

  • Setting and confirming appointments
  • Readying patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Preparing and sterilizing instruments for dentists
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Giving instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and handling X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Licensing and certification requirements for dental assistants vary by state, so consult with the Utah dental board for your state’s policies. Assistants handling X-ray machines more than likely will have to be licensed and certified. Most dental assistants who are either required or opt to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Training Options near Smithfield UT

Dental assistant programs are offered at Utah community colleges as well as trade or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most frequent credential attained is the certificate, which usually takes about one year to complete. There are fewer Associate Degree programs offered, and they provide a more extensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assistant classes. These programs can require anywhere from 2 to as long as 3 years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in Utah vocational schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are pursuing earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a practical component to the training as well. Many programs also sponsor internships with Smithfield UT dental practices or dentists.

Online Dental Assistant Training Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Smithfield UTEnrolling in an online dental assistant program might be a viable alternative for obtaining your education. Just keep in mind that the program will not be completely online, since there will be a practical portion to your training. But the balance of your classes will be accessible by means of your desktop computer in the convenience of your Smithfield UT home or elsewhere on your laptop or tablet. For those continuing to work while attending school, online dental programs make education a lot more accessible. Many may even offer lower tuition rates than their traditional competitors. And added expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be lessened as well. The clinical training can typically be performed at a community dental practice or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to receive the appropriate education is furnished. If you have the dedication for this mode of learning, you may find that attending an dental hygienist online program is the right choice for you.

Issues to Cover With Dental Assistant Programs

As we covered at the start of this article, a number of prospective students begin by looking at the cost and the location of the colleges. Maybe they search for some online options also. Even though these may be important initial considerations, there are several additional questions that you should address to the Smithfield UT area programs you are reviewing in order to arrive at an informed decision. Toward that end, we have supplied a list of questions to assist you with your evaluation and final selection of the right dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental Assistant School Accredited? There are a number of important reasons why you should only select an accredited dental assistant school. If you are going to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a prerequisite in nearly all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps guarantee that the training you get is comprehensive and of the highest quality. Employers in Smithfield UT often desire or require that job applicants are graduates of accredited programs. And finally, if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, usually they are not offered for non-accredited Utah schools.

Is The Proper Dental Program Available? You can opt to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just confirm that the Smithfield UT school you choose offers the program that you want. However, keep in mind that just because a college has an exceptional reputation as well as accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited college may have a strong accredited dental hygienist program, but might have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are only interested in a dental assistant degree, naturally it would not be the ideal college for you.

Is Enough Practical Training Provided? Practical or clinical training is an essential component of any dental training program. This applies for the online college options as well. A number of dental schools have relationships with local dental practices and clinics that furnish practical training for their students. It’s not only important that the school you select offers adequate clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you subsequently would like to work in. As an example, if you are interested in a career in pediatric dentistry, check that the Smithfield UT area  college you enroll in offers clinical rotation in an area dental office that specializes in dental services for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental schools you are considering sponsor internship programs. Internships are probably the ideal means to get hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Smithfield UT dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students build working relationships in the professional dental community. And they look good on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Assistance Furnished? Most students that have graduated from dental assistant schools require help landing their first job. Find out if the schools you are considering have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Colleges with high job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Smithfield UT dental community in addition to large networks of contacts where they can position their students for employment or internships.

Are the Classrooms Small? Ask the Smithfield UT area programs you are evaluating how big on average their classes are. The smaller classes generally offer a more personal setting for learning where students have increased access to the teachers. Conversely, bigger classes tend to be impersonal and offer little individualized instruction. If practical, ask if you can monitor a couple of classes at the college that you are leaning toward in order to experience first hand the level of interaction between teachers and students before making a commitment.

What is the Total Cost of the Program? Dental assistant colleges can vary in cost based on the length of the program and the amount of clinical training provided. Other variables, for instance the reputations of the colleges and whether they are private or public also come into play. But besides the tuition there are other substantial costs which can add up. They can include expenses for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when comparing the cost of colleges, remember to include all of the expenses associated with your education. Most colleges have financial aid departments, so make sure to ask what is offered as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Smithfield UT.

Are the Classes Accessible? Before selecting a dental school, you need to verify that the assistant program offers classes that suit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while receiving your education and must go to classes near your Smithfield UT home at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still be required to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up procedure is if you should need to miss any classes due to illness, work or family issues.

Considering Attending Dental Assistant School near Smithfield UT?

Following is some interesting background information about Smithfield Utah that you may find helpful.

Smithfield, Utah

Smithfield is a city in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,495 at the 2010 census,[3] with an estimated population of 11,014 in 2014.[4] It is included in the Logan, Utah-Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the second largest city in the area after Logan, the county seat. Smithfield is home to Sky View High School.

Originally known as "Summit Creek", Smithfield was founded in 1857 by the brothers Robert and John Thornley along with their cousin Seth Langdon who were sent north from Salt Lake City by Brigham Young to found a settlement on Summit Creek. After a preliminary scouting, Robert returned with his new wife Annie Brighton. The first winter was spent in a wagon box. By the next summer, with more settlers arriving, a small fort was built on the edge of the creek, one cabin of which remains. As the settlement grew, a bishop was named and the town took his name. By 1917 the town had planted trees on both sides of its Main Street and had acquired a Carnegie library and a Rotary club. Dependent for many years on dairying, a Del Monte canning factory, and the sugar beet industry, the town is now essentially a bedroom community for Logan and its Utah State University.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 7,261 people, 2,066 households, and 1,782 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,686.6 people per square mile (650.5/km²). There were 2,159 housing units at an average density of 501.5 per square mile (193.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.23% White, 0.12% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.82% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.04% of the population.
