How to Become a Dental Assistant in Cabazon California

Cabazon CA dental assistant working with dentistSelecting the right dental assistant program near Cabazon CA is an essential first step toward starting your new career in dentistry. But before you can make your choice, you need to assess and compare your school options. There is far more to doing your due diligence than picking the dental assistant college with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the one that is nearest to your residence. There are other crucial factors to consider also, such as the college’s reputation and accreditation. Your first step is to decide which of the 2 credentials you are most interested in obtaining training for, which may be contingent on the amount of time and money that you are willing to invest. The most common dental assistant program generally takes about 1 year to complete for a diploma or certificate. Meanwhile dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from two to three years to accomplish. Naturally with the longer training comes more expense. We will talk about all of these factors and supplemental questions that you should be asking the dental assistant schools you are looking at later in this article. But first, let’s review the duties of dental assistants and further discuss the training options offered.

The Duties of Dental Assistants in Cabazon CA

Cabazon CA dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an essential part of any Cabazon CA dental practice and can carry out a myriad of tasks. Their main job description is to provide support to the dentists and the administrative staff. In other words, to help keep the practice operating successfully. A number of dental assistants elect to specialize and acquire certification in a specific area, for instance orthodontics. Even so most assistants carry out any task that they are called upon to complete, including:

  • Scheduling and confirming appointments
  • Prepping patients for teeth treatments and cleanings
  • Sterilizing and preparing instruments for dentists
  • Clearing patients’ mouths with suction equipment
  • Supplying instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and processing X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Certification and licensing requirements for dental assistants deviate by state, so check with the California dental board for your state’s regulations. Assistants working with X-ray machines more than likely will have to be licensed and certified. Many dental assistants who are either required or decide to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination offered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Education Options near Cabazon CA

Dental assistant programs are available at California community colleges along with trade or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most frequent credential earned is the certificate, which generally takes about one year to finish. There are fewer Associate Degree programs available, and they provide a more extensive education, incorporating general subjects in addition to the dental assisting courses. These programs can require anywhere from two to as long as three years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in virtually every state. They are also offered in California trade schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are interested in earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a practical aspect to the training as well. A number of programs also sponsor internships with Cabazon CA dentists or dental practices.

Online Dental Assistant Classes

attending dental assistant school online in Cabazon CASelecting an online dental assistant school might be a great alternative for receiving your education. Just remember that the classes will not be completely online, since there will be a practical component to your training. But the remainder of your classes will be provided by means of your personal computer in the comfort of your Cabazon CA home or elsewhere on your tablet or laptop. For those working while attending college, online dental classes make education far more obtainable. Some may even have lower tuition rates than their on-campus competitors. And supplementary expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be reduced also. The practical training can usually be performed at a community dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the clinical and online training, everything required to receive the appropriate education is provided. If you have the discipline for this method of learning, you may find that enrolling in an dental hygienist online program is the best choice for you.

Subjects to Cover With Dental Assistant Programs

Cabazon CA dental assistant with dentist and patientOnce you have selected the dental specialization and kind of credential you wish to obtain, you can begin the procedure of comparing California programs and schools. As we covered at the beginning of this article, many prospective students begin by looking at the location and the cost of the colleges. Maybe they look for some online options also. Even though these may be relevant initial factors to consider, there are a few additional questions that you need to address to the Cabazon CA area programs you are reviewing in order to reach an informed decision. To start that process, we have included a list of questions to help you with your due diligence and final selection of the ideal dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental Assistant Program Accredited? There are many important reasons why you should only enroll in an accredited dental assistant college. If you are planning to become certified or licensed, then accreditation is a condition in almost all states. In order to take the Certified Dental Assistant exam, your dental school must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps establish that the instruction you receive is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Cabazon CA frequently prefer or require that job applicants are graduates of accredited colleges. And finally, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, usually they are not available for non-accredited California schools.

Is The Appropriate Dental Program Available? You can decide to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just verify that the Cabazon CA college you select offers the program that’s right for you. However, keep in mind that even if a school has a good reputation and accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited college may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but could have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are only interested in a dental assistant degree, obviously it would not be the right school for you.

Is Adequate Clinical Training Provided? Practical or clinical training is a necessary part of any dental training program. This holds true for the online college options as well. Most dental programs have relationships with area dental practices and clinics that provide clinical training for their students. It’s not only imperative that the school you enroll in provides adequate clinical hours but also provides them in the kind of practice that you ultimately would like to work in. For example, if you have an interest in a career in pediatric dentistry, check that the Cabazon CA area  school you enroll in offers clinical rotation in an area dental practice that focuses on dental services for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Verify if the dental colleges you are looking at have an internship program. Internships are undoubtedly the most effective method to receive hands-on, clinical experience in a professional Cabazon CA dental practice. They make it easier for students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students establish professional relationships in the local dentistry community. And they are attractive on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Assistance Offered? Many graduating students of dental assistant colleges require help landing their first job. Check if the colleges you are reviewing have job assistance programs, and what their job placement rates are. Programs with high job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Cabazon CA dental community as well as broad networks of contacts where they can position their students for employment or internships.

Are the Classes Smaller? Check with the Cabazon CA area programs you are looking at how big on average their classes are. The smaller classes generally offer a more personal atmosphere for learning where students have greater access to the instructors. Conversely, larger classes tend to be impersonal and provide little individualized instruction. If feasible, find out if you can monitor a few classes at the school that you are leaning toward so that you can witness first hand the degree of interaction between teachers and students before making a commitment.

What is the Total Expense of the Program? Dental assistant colleges can differ in cost dependent on the length of the program and the volume of practical training provided. Other variables, for instance the reputations of the colleges and if they are private or public also have an impact. But besides the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include costs for such things as textbooks and commuting as well as school materials, equipment and supplies. So when comparing the cost of schools, remember to include all of the expenses associated with your education. Most schools have financial assistance offices, so make sure to ask what is available as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Cabazon CA.

Are the Classes Convenient? Before enrolling in a dental school, you must verify that the assistant program provides classes that fit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while getting your education and must go to classes near your Cabazon CA home at nights or on weekends. And even if you select an online college, you will still be required to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while addressing your concerns, ask what the make-up procedure is if you should have to miss any classes due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Following is some interesting background information about Cabazon California that you may find helpful.

Cabazon, California

Cabazon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 2,535 during the 2010 Census. The area is a popular tourist and traveler stop, mainly due to the Morongo Casino & Resorts, and the luxury shopping Desert Hills Premium Outlet.

Cabazon was initially established as an unincorporated settlement in the 1870s after the Southern Pacific Railroad built a railroad station. The station was originally named Jacinto, but was renamed Cabezone after a nearby Indian rancheria. Cabezone was a chief of the Cahuilla Indians so named for his large head. A worker's camp named Hall's Siding which included a hotel and dance hall was established but eventually abandoned after the railroad relocated. In 1884 a new town was laid out by the Scottish-owned Cabazon Land and Water Company which established a fruit farm. Some lots were sold, but were later repurchased, and the land stayed intact until it was bought by a developer in 1910. The developer established a school and a post office but there were few residents.[3]

Cabazon was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1955.[4] The main advantage of incorporating at the time was that under California law, incorporated cities could host cardrooms while unincorporated areas could not.[4] Over the next 16 years, the city struggled with scandal, political instability, and stalled growth, as cardroom operators vied with other landowners and residents for control of the city government.[4] In its first seven years alone, the city went through 18 police chiefs and 21 City Council members.[5] A key dispute was between residents who desired to see Cabazon developed into a lush resort city like Palm Springs to the east, versus cardroom owners who desired to keep Cabazon's population small so that the city government's operating expenses (and hence their taxes) would remain low and not impinge on their profits.[4] At one point the city was able to raise as much as $19,000 per year by turning then-U.S. Route 60 down Main Street into a speed trap. That revenue stream vanished when Interstate 10 was finished in California circa 1964 and US Route 60 was decommissioned.[4] The final blow was when a cardroom initiated an unsuccessful legal challenge to the City Council's attempt to raise the license fee charged to cardrooms. This infuriated landowners and residents who did not work at or otherwise benefit from the city's cardrooms. They then sought to shut down the city so that the cardrooms would also be forced to shut down.[4] On September 14, 1971, the city's electorate voted in a special election 192 to 131 in favor of disincorporation.[4] The election results were upheld by the state courts,[4] and the city government disincorporated in 1972.[6] Discussions about reincorporating the area have been reported intermittently during the 2000s.[5][7]
