Walnut Grove AL dental assistant working with dentistChoosing the right dental assistant training course near Walnut Grove AL is an essential initial step toward beginning your new career in dentistry. But prior to making your choice, you need to evaluate and compare your school options. There is much more to completing your due diligence than choosing the dental assistant school with the least expensive tuition or enrolling in the one that is nearest to your home. There are other crucial factors to take into account also, such as the school’s accreditation and reputation. Your first step is to decide which of the 2 credentials you are most interested in obtaining training for, which may depend on the amount of time and money that you are willing to invest. The most common dental assistant program usually takes about 12 months to complete for a certificate or diploma. Meanwhile dental assistants may also earn an Associate Degree, which can take anywhere from 2 to 3 years to finish. Naturally with the prolonged training comes more cost. We will cover all of these concerns and additional questions that you need to be asking the dental assistant schools you are analyzing later in this article. But first, let’s explore the roles of dental assistants and further discuss the training options provided.

The Function of a Dental Assistant in Walnut Grove AL

Walnut Grove AL dental assistant and oral surgeonDental assistants are an essential part of any Walnut Grove AL dental office and can carry out a multitude of tasks. Their fundamental job description is to give support to the dentists and the administrative staff. Or simply put, to help keep the practice working efficiently. A number of dental assistants elect to specialize and earn certification in a specific area, for example orthodontics. However the majority of assistants carry out any job that they are called upon to complete, including:

  • Setting and confirming appointments
  • Readying patients for teeth cleanings and treatments
  • Sterilizing and preparing instruments for dentists
  • Using suction equipment to clear patients’ mouths
  • Giving instruments to dentists during procedures
  • Readying X-ray machines and processing X-rays
  • Purchasing office and dental supplies

Licensing and certification requirements for dental assistants differ by state, so check with the Alabama dental board for your state’s mandates. Assistants dealing with X-ray machines most likely will have to be licensed and certified. A large number of dental assistants who are either required or decide to become certified take the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam provided by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Dental Assistant Education Options near Walnut Grove AL

Dental assistant courses are available at Alabama community colleges in addition to technical or vocational schools. As previously mentioned, the most typical credential attained is the certificate, which generally takes about 1 year to finish. There are less Associate Degree programs available, and they furnish a more extensive education, including general subjects in addition to the dental assisting classes. These programs can require anywhere from two to as long as three years to finish and must be accredited by the CDA in nearly every state. They are also offered in Alabama vocational schools and community colleges. Regardless of whether you are pursuing earning a certificate or a degree as a dental assistant, there will be a practical component to the training as well. Some programs also sponsor internships with Walnut Grove AL dental practices or dentists.

Online Dental Assistant Training Programs

attending dental assistant school online in Walnut Grove ALChoosing an online dental assistant program may be a good alternative for obtaining your education. Just keep in mind that the program will not be completely online, since there will be a clinical portion to your training. But the rest of your classes will be available by means of your desktop computer in the comfort of your Walnut Grove AL home or elsewhere on your tablet or laptop. For those continuing to work while attending college, online dental classes make education much more obtainable. Some may even offer lower tuition costs than their traditional counterparts. And supplementary expenses for items like books, school supplies and commuting may be reduced also. The clinical training can typically be performed at a community dental office or in an on-campus lab. With both the online and clinical training, everything necessary to receive the proper education is provided. If you have the discipline for this method of learning, you might find that attending an dental hygienist online school is the best choice for you.

Issues to Cover With Dental Assistant Programs

As we covered at the start of this article, a number of prospective students begin by looking at the cost and the location of the colleges. Possibly they look for some online options also. Although these may be significant initial factors to consider, there are several additional questions that you should address to the Walnut Grove AL area colleges you are comparing in order to arrive at an informed decision. To start that process, we have included a list of questions to help you with your evaluation and ultimate selection of the best dental hygienist college for you.

Is the Dental Assistant School Accredited? There are several important reasons why you should only pick an accredited dental assistant school. If you are planning to become licensed or certified, then accreditation is a requirement in nearly all states. To qualify to take the Certified Dental Assistant examination, your dental college must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CDA). Accreditation also helps ensure that the instruction you get is of the highest quality and comprehensive. Employers in Walnut Grove AL often desire or require that job applicants are graduates of accredited programs. And last, if you are requesting financial aid or a student loan, often they are not provided for non-accredited Alabama programs.

Is The Appropriate Dental Program Available? You can decide to train to become a dental assistant by earning either a Certificate or an Associate Degree. Just make certain that the Walnut Grove AL college you decide on has the program that’s right for you. However, bear in mind that even if a college has a good reputation as well as accreditation does not mean all of its programs do as well. For example, an accredited school may have a solid accredited dental hygienist program, but could have a weaker or non-accredited dental assistant program. So if you are only interested in a dental assistant degree, obviously it would not be the best college for you.

Is Sufficient Practical Training Provided? Clinical or practical training is an important component of any dental training program. This is true for the online college options as well. Many dental programs have relationships with area dental practices and clinics that provide clinical training for their students. It’s not only important that the program you choose provides enough clinical hours but also provides them in the type of practice that you ultimately would like to work in. For example, if you are interested in a career in pediatric dentistry, confirm that the Walnut Grove AL area  program you choose offers clinical rotation in a local dental office that specializes in dental care for children.

Is There an Internship Program? Find out if the dental colleges you are considering sponsor an internship program. Internships are undoubtedly the most effective means to receive hands-on, practical experience in a real Walnut Grove AL dental practice. They help students to transition from the theoretical to the practical. They can also help students establish working relationships in the professional dental community. And they are attractive on resumes also.

Is Job Placement Assistance Provided? Many students that have graduated from dental assistant schools require help obtaining their first job. Ask if the programs you are considering have job placement programs, and what their job placement rates are. Schools with higher job placement rates are likely to have good reputations within the Walnut Grove AL dental community as well as broad networks of contacts where they can place their students for employment or internships.

Are Classrooms Small? Ask the Walnut Grove AL area colleges you are looking at how big on average their classes are. The smaller classes tend to offer a more intimate environment for learning where students have greater access to the instructors. Conversely, larger classes can be impersonal and provide little individualized instruction. If practical, find out if you can monitor a couple of classes at the college that you are leaning toward in order to experience first hand the level of interaction between instructors and students before enrolling.

What is the Total Cost of the Program? Dental assistant training can differ in cost depending on the length of the program and the volume of clinical training provided. Other variables, such as the reputations of the schools and whether they are private or public also have an impact. But along with the tuition there are other substantial expenses which can add up. They can include costs for such things as commuting and textbooks as well as school equipment, materials and supplies. So when examining the cost of schools, don’t forget to add all of the expenses related to your education. Most colleges have financial aid departments, so be sure to find out what is offered as far as grants, loans and scholarships in Walnut Grove AL.

Are the Classes Convenient? Before selecting a dental college, you need to confirm that the assistant program offers classes that fit your schedule. This is especially true if you will be working while getting your education and must attend classes near your Walnut Grove AL home in the evenings or on weekends. And even if you select an online school, you will still have to schedule your practical training classes. Also, while making your inquiries, ask what the make-up practice is if you should have to miss any classes because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Walnut Grove is a town in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. Around 1825, the town was known as "Thomas Crossroads", after landowner Jordan D. Thomas. In 1848, the town was named "Cornelius", after postmaster Harvey Cornelius. In 1849, it was renamed "Walnut Grove".[4]

The first college preparatory school for males and females in northeast Alabama was established by act of Legislature in 1884. The Walnut Grove College ran for 15 years, and during the college's peak the town had grown to have 13 stores, including a drug store with a soda fountain. The Walnut Grove College closed in 1899 as high schools were being established in Etowah County.
